Sotomayor To Students: Judges Don’t Make Policy

In today’s Los Angeles Daily Journal (subscribers only),  your blogger takes a look at Sonia Sotomayor’s teaching career at Columbia and NYU.

Quick summary:

Contrary to accusations made about her by conservative activists, who are seeking to portray the nominee as a liberal activist, she always told students that judges should follow the law, respect precedent and not attempt to influence public policy, according to a former student and a faculty colleague at Columbia.

Sotomayor also emphasized the importance of a careful reading of the Constitution and relevant statutes, and stressed that decisions must be based purely upon the law, those familiar with her teachings say.
